Biogas production throughanaerobic digestion
The three benefits of the anaerobic digestion process are to:
recover organic materials from farming, food industry or local authority activities
produce biogas, a renewable form of energy which can be converted into green electricity, green heat, green gas and BioNGV
produce organic fertiliser that can replace chemical fertilisers: digestate
This natural biological process is similar to food digestion: it is based on the conversion of organic matter into biogas, through the action of bacteria living in an anaerobic environment (i.e. oxygen-free). Transposed into the industrial world, this process is replicated in heated and stirred hermetic tanks: “methanisers” or “digesters”.
How is biogas recovered?
The biogas produced largely consists of methane (50% to 70%) which can be recovered in various ways:
As green gas
(Biomethane)
Biomethane derived from biogas can be purified, processed and fed into gas distribution and transmission networks (GRDF and GRT Gaz). The rates came into effect in October 2011. They are guaranteed for 15 years.
As electricity and heat
Cogeneration converts biogas into heat and electricity. Electricity is fed back into the Enedis network while heat is recovered locally. The purchase prices of the electricity produced were set in July 2006 and increased in May 2011. They are guaranteed for 20 years.
As BioNGV
Biomethane is used to produce BioNGV fuel (Natural Gas for Vehicles), to supply gas-powered vehicles.
What is
digestate?
Digestate is the material residue obtained after anaerobic digestion. It is an organic amendment used, in turn, to fertilise agricultural land.
